In this week’s issue of the magazine, Robin Schwartz photographed Lena Dunham’s dog Lamby for Dunham’s Personal History “A Box of Puppies.” Schwartz, who took her first photograph of an animal at ten years old, told me, “I am an animal person. I cannot survive without animals, this is who I have always been.” Her assistant on the shoot was her thirteen-year-old daughter, Amelia, who is also the subject of Schwartz’s body of work “Amelia’s World,” a magical portrait stretching over eleven years, which pictures Amelia with all types of animals—the largest is an elephant and the smallest is a Cotton-Top Tamarin. Schwartz is a professor of photography at William Paterson University, in New Jersey, and is represented by ClampArt.

EURASIAN JAY: I was thinking we could all go for thistle seeds tonight.
BLUE JAY: Oh, thistle seeds. Cool.
EURASIAN JAY: Something wrong with thistle seeds?
BLUE JAY: No, that sounds great. It’s just that I had thistle seeds for lunch, so…
EURASIAN JAY: Do you want something else then?
BLUE JAY(sighs): What I want is for you toknowwhat I want.
EURASIAN JAY: Jennifer, please. We have guests.
Silence. Various feather rufflings.
RAVEN: Courtney and I would be down for some carrion.
CROW: Carrion isexactlywhat I feel like right now. How’d you know, babe?
RAVEN: I just know you, babe.
EURASIAN JAY(coughs): Do you want carrion, Jen?
BLUE JAY: You know I’m vegan, right? Vegans don’t eat carrion.
EURASIAN JAY: Oh, that’s right. You’revegan. Weird, because I thought vegans aren’t supposed to eatinsects.
BLUE JAY: That was like two months ago. I’ve recommitted since then. You try being vegan, it’s harder than it looks.
EURASIAN JAY: Somebody get her a medal.

Charlotte Dumas has a knack for getting close to animals—she’s photographed tigers, wolves, service dogs, and strays. Her close-range portraits tend to show otherwise intimidating animals in tender moments. Her latest project, commissioned by the Corcoran Gallery, looks inside the stables at the Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Dumas photographed the service horses, who pull caissons in military funerals after a day’s work, resting in their stalls. “The bond between mankind and animals, and the extensive history that it accompanies, is my great interest.” says Dumas.
